Ready for First Communion

April 22, 2014

from Holy Cross 2nd grade teacher, Ms. Spaniol –

Holy Cross School second graders and religious education students from the parish gathered recently in a retreat to prepare for their first communion. All will be receiving first communion during regular mass times the three weekends following Easter weekend.

Keep them in your prayers as they mark this important rite of passage and prepare to receive Jesus in the Holy Eucharist.

Living Like Saints

September 10, 2013

from Holy Cross 8th-grade teachers, Mrs. Patterson and Mrs. Schnell –

Striving to practice the virtues that the saints lived every day of their lives is just what the 8th grade homerooms of Patterson and Schnell hope to do this school year. Each quarter, after some research and collaboration, each 8th grade homeroom will choose a new saint whom they want to be more like in spirit, word and deed. The 8th graders then decorate their homeroom doors with pictures, symbols and quotes of their saint.

Mrs. Schnell’s homeroom this quarter chose Maximilian Kolbe for his selflessness and heroic display of compassion for fellow man.

Blessed Teresa of Calcutta was chosen by Mrs. Patterson’s homeroom for her profound obedience to Jesus and her tireless ministry to those most in need of love.

Boys Invited To Pray The Rosary

December 28, 2012

from Holy Cross mom, Eva Gavin –

St. Louis Marie de Montfort said…
“When people say the Rosary together it is far more formidable to the devil than one said privately, because in this public prayer it is an army that is attacking. It is very easy to break a single stick, but if you join it to others to make a bundle, it cannot be broken. In union, there is strength.”

The Gavins are inviting all 5th through 8th grade Holy Cross boys over to their house once a month to pray the rosary.

Last Friday night, 23 boys joined together to pray, eat and hang out. The boys have been given the assignment of coming up with a name for the group before the January gathering.

Dates:  Jan 25, Feb 22, March 8, April 19, May 31

Time: 7 – 10 p.m.

Where: 9418 W. 111th Terrace, Overland Park, KS

Questions? Call or email Eva Gavin, 706-7286.

Thankful 6th Graders

November 21, 2012

Combining Reading, Social Studies and Religion studies, Holy Cross 6th grade teachers Mrs Carney and Mrs Lewis celebrated Thanksgiving with their classes. It was an afternoon of fun and learning!

During the meal, they learned proper manners, Mrs. Carney’s favorite song, and how Mrs. Lewis can carve a very nice turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Enjoy the long weekend. Classes will resume on Tuesday at Holy Cross…

Shine the Light: Holy Cross Religious Education

September 27, 2012

We hope your family will join us tonight at Holy Cross School for our first Shine The Light potluck dinner.  Bring a dish to share – dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Pflumm Hall.  Come on down when you can make it, though. We’ll begin the presentation about 6:15-ish. Paperware, lemonade and tea will be provided.

Holy Cross teachers will share some brief notes about our K – 8th grade religious education program.

After dinner, we’ll test your family’s knowledge with a trivia game with questions from our  K-8 religious curriculum. Are you smarter than a fifth grader?

Then we’ll stamp our passports as we travel through the school with stops for a decade of the rosary, and to learn more from our Holy Cross teachers about confirmation and service, communion and reconciliation, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and our Vocation Club.

Our Catholic Faith: Love it. Learn it. Live it.
