Sharing Service Experiences

April 10, 2014

pix from Holy Cross mom, Mrs. Sullivan –

Holy Cross parish 8th graders recently presented a service fair at the church after masses. The students, either alone or in small groups, worked on service projects as part of their confirmation program. They chose a local organization and spent time there, learning about the group’s mission and helping them out. They put together display boards and wrote a paper, explaining which organization they picked and how they benefit the community.

The service fair was an opportunity for all our Holy Cross confirmation students to show their work and to share the lessons they’d learned from this service experience.

Thank you to our Holy Cross Director of Youth Ministries and Confirmation Coordinator, Sandy Schluter, for the work she has done preparing our students for confirmation.

Service Project Presentations

March 6, 2013

from Holy Cross junior high teacher, Mrs. Patterson –

For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink,
a stranger and you welcomed me,
naked and you clothed me,
ill and you cared for me,
in prison and you visited me.

Matthew 25: 35-36

Holy Cross Eighth graders have been busy reaching out to those who are in need as they model the gospel message.

They recently completed their Justice and Service experience in preparation for receiving the sacrament of Confirmation.  In late February, the eighth graders presented their service projects by setting up display boards in the Parish Hall.  Parishioners and family members gathered downstairs following the 9 and 11 o’clock masses to view the boards and ask questions of the students.

Through this Confirmation experience our eighth graders are learning how to see Christ in all they meet and serve Him through their selfless actions.

Patterson-

Porque tuve hambre y me diste comida,
Tuve sed y me disteis de beber,
fui extranjero y me acogistes,
estube desnudo y me vestisteis
enfermo y cudastes de mí,
en la cárcel y me visitastes.

Mateo 25:35-36

Confirmation Retreat 2013

February 6, 2013

from Holy Cross junior high teacher, Mrs. Patterson –

On January 20, our school’s thirty-six 8th graders, along with the parish’s School of Religion Confirmation candidates, took part in a Confirmation retreat presented by the REAP Team. The REAP Team, (Retreat Evangelization and Prayer), is a Catholic non-profit, outreach of the Youth Ministry Office of the Archdiocese of Saint Louis. The REAP team is composed of adults and teenagers who are specially trained to minister the gospel and God’s love to others, particularly young people through the use of comedy, skits, faith sharing, games, and music.

All retreat participants began the retreat by attending the 9 o’clock parish mass, reminding our students of the importance of nourishing our souls through the Eucharist. Following mass the Confirmation candidates went downstairs to the parish hall. Everyone present found time for laughter, fellowship, good food, spiritual reflection, and prayer.

The 8th grade teachers and parents work together preparing the Holy Cross students for this sacrament. We hope to provide our 8th graders with an understanding that the grace received through the sacrament of Confirmation, by the power of the Holy Spirit, repeatedly comes to their aid and irresistibly pushes back the urgings of self-will, helping them to preserve their sense of values, and keep them on a virtuous life so that their Catholic faith may triumph.

The peace they find then is a real peace in Christ.

Comforting Cats & Dogs

October 16, 2012

Thanks to all the Holy Cross families who donated towels, sheets, blankets and plush toys for the dogs and cats at Wayside Waifs.

Holy Cross students Jimmy Lambrechts, Devin Fuhrmann, Quinn Lindsey and Tyler Eccles decided on Wayside Waifs for their 8th grade confirmation project. They collected four FULL tubs of blankets, towels and stuffed animals to make the animal cages a bit more cozy .

The boys were given a tour of the Kansas City animal rescue/pet adoption facility, and they learned that many animals need the stuffed animals for comfort, as some are used to litter mates to snuggle and others are just scared when they first come to the shelter.

The Holy Cross community donated the items at school, and the boys delivered them to Wayside Waifs last week.

Quinn has decided to volunteer at Wayside Waifs next summer – You must be 14 to volunteer WITH a parent or 16 to volunteer solo.

Way to go, Holy Cross!

Shine the Light: Holy Cross Religious Education

September 27, 2012

We hope your family will join us tonight at Holy Cross School for our first Shine The Light potluck dinner.  Bring a dish to share – dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Pflumm Hall.  Come on down when you can make it, though. We’ll begin the presentation about 6:15-ish. Paperware, lemonade and tea will be provided.

Holy Cross teachers will share some brief notes about our K – 8th grade religious education program.

After dinner, we’ll test your family’s knowledge with a trivia game with questions from our  K-8 religious curriculum. Are you smarter than a fifth grader?

Then we’ll stamp our passports as we travel through the school with stops for a decade of the rosary, and to learn more from our Holy Cross teachers about confirmation and service, communion and reconciliation, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and our Vocation Club.

Our Catholic Faith: Love it. Learn it. Live it.
