Their Future’s So Bright…

May 5, 2014

Our Holy Cross graduating 8th graders are featured on the bulletin board inside the front doors. See if you can guess which baby photos belong to each soon-to-be grad!  Their cap-and-gown pictures will be matched up with the baby photos in the next few weeks, so you can see if you’re right.

5th – 8th Graders Make Beautiful Music

April 29, 2014

Holy Cross students gathered to make joyful noise together last week at the annual Spring Concert. The concert included performances by the 5th grade band, 6th grade band, junior high band, jazz band, 5th grade, 6th grade and junior high vocal choirs, junior high bell choir and drama class, along with several solo and small group highlights.

This was the concert debut of our new Holy Cross Jazzy Hornets jazz band. And they sounded great!

The big finale of the show featured all of the students in grades 5 through 8 gathering to sing ‘I Need You To Survive’ by Frazier.

Thanks to our music director Mrs. Cain, junior high choir director Mrs. Kincaid, drama director Ms. Marx, and the accompianists and other helpers who made this night possible.

Check out pictures and videos from the concert on the school’s Shutterfly photo gallery at holycrossop.shutterfly.com (password = holycrossop)

Sharing Service Experiences

April 10, 2014

pix from Holy Cross mom, Mrs. Sullivan –

Holy Cross parish 8th graders recently presented a service fair at the church after masses. The students, either alone or in small groups, worked on service projects as part of their confirmation program. They chose a local organization and spent time there, learning about the group’s mission and helping them out. They put together display boards and wrote a paper, explaining which organization they picked and how they benefit the community.

The service fair was an opportunity for all our Holy Cross confirmation students to show their work and to share the lessons they’d learned from this service experience.

Thank you to our Holy Cross Director of Youth Ministries and Confirmation Coordinator, Sandy Schluter, for the work she has done preparing our students for confirmation.

Making Art the Ancient Way

April 7, 2014

from Holy Cross art teacher, Mr. Long –

The Holy Cross 8th grade Specials art class this year focused on ancient art and methods. We used two of the oldest methods of creating vessels known – coiling clay and coiling with fibers.

Originally, coiled fiber pots were made from prairie grasses, ours were made with modern materials such as paper and yarn. Other than that, the methods are the same. As you can see from the examples below, the 8th grade did a fantastic job with their creations.

8th Graders Donate Carnival Funds

April 2, 2014

Mission Carnivalfrom 8th grade teacher, Mrs. Patterson –

Holy Cross 8th graders voted to send the proceeds from the Mission Carnival they hosted in February to Father Bob Conroy’s Mission in Guatemala.

Fr. Bob and his fellow missionary priests currently are feeding over 300 children a day who otherwise would go hungry. He has been working with the local government to secure a place to establish a food kitchen.

The 8th graders remember the year that Fr. Bob was with us at Holy Cross and wanted to help his cause for establishing a food kitchen. They recalled how he visited their classrooms and shared his life as a Missionary of Charity priest.

After our expenses for the large inflatables that were in the gym and some odds/ends carnival supplies, the 8th grade class of 2014 will be donating about $625.00 to Fr. Bob’s Guatemala Mission.

Bingo!

February 27, 2014

Thanks to all who came out for taco dinner and a fun time at bingo at Family Fun Night last Friday.

The evening was great fun, and a successful fundraiser for the 8th grade class’ graduation fund. The money will help support the graduation brunch, a class outing and the class gift that the 8th graders will leave with the school.

If you missed this year’s Family Fun Night / Taco-Bingo Night, never fear. It’s an annual fundraiser, and our current Holy Cross 7th graders and their parents will be hosting it next year!

Here a few pictures from the event. There are more pictures in the Holy Cross photo gallery at holycrossop.shutterfly.com (password = holycrossop).
