2nd Graders Celebrate First Communion

May 12, 2011

from Holy Cross 2nd-grade teacher Marie Spaniol –

On Saturday, May 7, the second graders at Holy Cross School received their First Holy Communion. Preparation for this sacrament is two-fold: preparation at home, paired with preparation in the classroom.

At home, the students work with their parents, who help them to see how their own family approaches Jesus in this sacrament. Through the at-home preparation, the students are also realizing the importance placed in their families on Jesus and on receiving Jesus regularly at mass.

Preparation at school focuses on the parish, as well as our worldwide community. The importance of this sacrament, receiving Jesus, is that now the student is called to claim this piece of their faith life as their own. Attending mass is now a priority and a responsibility of theirs. Contributing to the service projects that our school participates in, and sharing their newfound love of Jesus with those they encounter everyday becomes a new focus.

Take a moment to say a prayer for our students that they will continue to witness Jesus’ love each and every day. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my Catholic faith with the youth of our school.
