Modern Woodmen Speeches

May 16, 2012

from Holy Cross jr high teacher, Mr. Fournier -

The Modern Woodmen Speech Contest is an annual speech competition that 7th and 8th grade students at Holy Cross participate in. Essentially, this is a two-part assignment that involves writing a research paper that will eventually be converted into a speech. Each student will give the speech in class and from that point eight students will be selected to participate in the Holy Cross Speech Competition. The first and second place winners will be awarded a plaque and the opportunity to advance to the regional competition. Each student that participates will receive a pin and a certificate of participation.

This is an excellent way for students to refine and build upon existing public speaking skills, to effectively communicate thoughts and opinions to an audience outside of the classroom, and continue to develop important writing skills. For the 2011-2012 school year, Kyle Lauterwasser and Catherine Aaronson were the two students that were asked to move on to the competition at Holy Spirit. Kyle placed 3rd at the regional competition. Both students did an excellent job and represented Holy Cross very well.

6th-Grade Self Portraits

May 3, 2012

from Holy Cross art teacher, Mr. Long -

Holy Cross 6th graders created

self portraits inspired

by artist Chuck Close.

We took a photo of each student, scanned it, made it black & white, and broke it down into 1×1″ segments. Then they drew each one of those segments, one square at a time. It’s a tough assignment to stick with it. It’s tempting to give up and start to draw the whole thing or start shading in multiple squares. But if the greyscale is close and they stick to the one-square-at-a-time method, it’s a no fail project!

5th-Grade Teachers

November 28, 2011

Thanks to Holy Cross mom Monica Roberts for pictures and info -

Holy Cross first-grade students had an opportunity recently to interact with 5th graders to learn about Native Americans.

Fifth-grade students completed dioramas that showed how Native Americans used their environment for shelter and food resources, and  brought their dioramas to Mrs. Anderson’s classroom. The 5th graders explained the shelter of each region and how it was built using the resources available in their environment.

The first-grade class loved the dioramas and had lot of questions for the 5th graders!

Stepping Into Geometry

November 15, 2011

from Holy Cross 4th-grade teacher, Mrs. Gittinger -

The fourth graders at Holy Cross don’t just study geometry… They ‘get into’ it!

As a culminating activity for their geometry unit, the fourth graders decorated yard plastic with all the geometric knowledge they had acquired.  They then created an inflatable rectangular prism, turned on the fan and crawled inside their GeoCube.

The students calculated that it took 175 cubic feet of air to inflate their plastic paradise.

Watch video of the students doing the geometry song that Mrs. G. taught them! It’s great. (Thanks to Holy Cross mom, Monica Roberts, for sharing it!) It’s on the Holy Cross photo gallery site. (password = holycrossop)
