With the snow days this week it is going to be challenging for our 8th graders who are organizing our Mission Carnival on Thursday. With your help they will still be able to have a successful event.
Remember that tickets are $.25 each or 5 for $1.00
Please send ticket money to school Thursday morning
in an envelope clearly marked with:
Mission Carnival Tickets
Your Child’s Name & Room Code
Also, we are asking each family to bring two 2-Liter bottles of pop. Send them with your oldest child. I know with the weather this might be a challenge if you have not purchased them. We will appreciate whatever you can do.
For more information about the carnival,
please read the flyer in last week’s newsletter.

Don’t let the kids get too excited yet – this isn’t an announcement. Just a reminder…
The snow has begun. Just in case we get as much snow as forecast, remember to watch the local TV news for closing information.
Holy Cross School and Early Education Center in Overland Park will be listed as
JOHNSON AND WYANDOTTE COUNTY
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
or
WYANDOTTE AND JOHNSON COUNTY
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS
We WON’T be listed as Holy Cross Catholic School or Holy Cross Preschool.
Links to keep handy:
PLEASE NOTE – tonight’s PTO meeting has been canceled due to the weather. Please plan on joining us at the next scheduled meeting in the Holy Cross school library on February 2.

I have received information from Dr. O’Hara, our superintendent, that she made the decision to close schools today based on the forecast of blowing snow and icy road conditions for this morning. She typically does not close due to cold temps only.
The temperature forecast for tonight and the early morning is for the wind chill factor to be below zero. However, at this point, there is no additional snow predicted nor winds high enough to create drifts. Even so, the public schools may close for tomorrow because of the cold and the subsequent transportation issues it can cause for them. Despite this, we may be in session, as a majority of our families transport students in private vehicles.
So, we may be open tomorrow even if the public schools are closed.
If we are open tomorrow you may want to make other transportation arrangements for your child(ren) if they walk to school or if you rely on an inexperienced teen-aged driver.
Finally, some local radio stations (KMBZ is one) are not announcing all the school closings but referring listeners to their website for the full list. This morning, they did announce all the public districts but not us. Dr. O’Hara doubts that she can influence that procedure, but will see what she can do. Your best bet is to watch one of the major TV networks.
I will also send out an email and post it to our blog and website (both public and parent page) if we close.
Have a great day, and stay safe and warm!

Snow is in the forecast for later this week. While it won’t cause any school closures this week, I’m sure we’re bound to run into some flurries on a school day at some point before springtime.
We used to have a snowblower, and it really helped with clearing the sidewalks quickly. We don’t have one anymore. Luckily we have some great volunteer parents at Holy Cross who show up to clear the pathways for our students and faculty.
However, a snowblower would be really helpful, so let me throw out this Christmas wish…
if anyone has a snowblower sitting in their garage
needing a new home,
Holy Cross School would love to adopt it!
NOTE: See the comment below. We had a very speedy response from a Holy Cross parent who offered to donate money toward a snowblower and challenged other Holy Cross families to match it. I don’t know much about snowblowers, but a quick peek at the Home Depot site shows them ranging from $300 – 1,000+. If we don’t find a used snowblower that someone offers to the school, would you consider taking Scott up on his challenge?

We had a terrific breakfast and Open House at Holy Cross on Sunday. Thanks for coming!
And thanks to all those who put together the bake sale and to all who purchased the bake goods! $200+ was raised for our Guardian Angel Fund.
I was so busy greeting school families and visiting families that I completely forgot to have any photos taken. If you happened to take any, e-mail some to me and I’ll share them – mgates@holycrosscatholicschool.com
I know what was top of mind for many students early this morning – a potential snow day. Sorry, kids. No such luck this time. But, it looks like we’re in for a very cold week, so make sure that everyone is bundled up well as they head into school.
