Everyday Ways to Help Holy Cross

September 30, 2011

The Entertainment Book sale has wrapped up. Please get your orders to the school office today, or return any books you were unable to sell. Thanks for your help with this school fundraiser!

There are a number of ways you can help raise funds for Holy Cross while just living your everyday life!  Let us know if you’ve got more ideas (just add a comment to this post!)

Goodsearch

You can raise 1 cent for Holy Cross for every Internet search you do. Just sign up at Goodsearch.com and designate Holy Cross as your choice for donations. Imagine if all our school families did searches with Goodsearch instead of Google or Yahoo. Those pennies would add up quickly!

Box Tops / Labels for Education / Best Choice UPCs

Holy Cross gets 10 cents for every Box Top collected. Plus, there are bonus Box Tops and other frequents specials with the program. Click here for a list of all the Box Tops products available. The school received more than $1,800 from Box Tops last year.  With your help, we can top that this year!  The money, which goes to the Special Projects fund at the school, which helps pay for things like bus transportation to the church for All-School Mass on inclement weather days.

The Labels for Education program is based on points, not actual money. Labels are generally marked for 1, 5 or 10 points. We can pick merchandise for the school with the points collected. The school used some of our Label collection points from last year to purchase 15 new playground balls. Click here for a list of products that carry various points of Labels.  (available also in Spanish)

Best Choice UPCs are worth 3 cents each to the school. Doesn’t seem like much, but that really adds up.  We made $120 last year from Best Choice UPCs. With your help, we could double that this year. Just look through your cupboard and see how many Best Choice items you have!

So, when you spot a Box Top, Label or Best Choice UPC, clip it! Keep a little bag of them in your kitchen, and drop them by the school when it’s full.

Paper Recycling

Don’t throw out all those newspapers, office papers and homework sheets! Keep a bin in the garage for them. When it’s full, drop it by the green recycling containers in the Holy Cross preschool parking lot!   As part of the Special Projects fund, the money raised from recycling helped pay for things like wall mounts for the SmartBoards and a new computer for our school secretary.

SunnyD Book Spree

This is a new one for Holy Cross this year.  Please save the UPC labels from SunnyD products (16 oz or larger).  For every 20 labels, the school gets 20 Scholastic books! You can send those in along with your other labels and UPCs, and they’ll get sorted.  Click here for more information on the program.

Scrip

Scrip = Gift Cards, pretty much.  Buy cards for face value, and the school gets a percentage.  There are loads of stores, restaurants and other businesses on the list. Use them for groceries, gas, gifts, etc.  And you get a cut of the deal, as well. A percentage of the school’s percentage can be used toward your tuition bill or to donate to the Guardian Angel Fund.  The whole program is just Win/Win.  The money raised from Scrip is part of the church budget.  Click here to take a look at the list of Scrip available, and figure out how you can use it for your family’s purchases.

Target REDcard

The Target card is another Win/Win proposition for you and Holy Cross.  Choose Holy Cross as your school. You get 5% off your Target purchases when you use it, and the school gets a 1% donation with your purchase, as well.  We just received a check for more than $800, which will be directed to the ‘Special Projects’ fund. (That fund pays for things like staff enrichment programs.)  Click here to find out how to get your very own Target REDcard.

Scrip Tip | AMC Bonus Cash

November 8, 2010

With the holidays approaching, it’s time to think about using Scrip for your gift purchases. In an effort to help you make the most efficient use of the great Scrip we offer, one of our Scrip coordinators, Cathy Downey, will be keeping us posted on some of the best deals.

Starting next week, we’ll offer AMC Theatres’ Bonus Cash. We offered this last year also. (And we ran out of them, so make sure to order yours soon!)

When you purchase a $25 AMC® Gift Card, your card will be loaded with a little extra “Bonus Cash”. That’s right – when you purchase the $25 AMC® Gift Card, the card will be worth $26.25.

The Scrip contribution remains the same at 7% and is based on the original face value of the gift card.

Recycled Gift Cards?

July 12, 2010

Holy Cross mom Catherine Gailloux came across a company that recycles gift cards. Another Holy Cross mom, Marti Palmer, thought that sounded like a great idea and started looking into it a bit more. As you know, we sell Scrip (gift cards), so we certainly hand out a lot of this recyclable plastic.

EarthWorks, located in Ohio, is the company they found. We could just collect the used cards and ship them to EarthWorks and they’d recycle them, but of course that would cost us the shipping. Since we sell the Scrip as a fundraiser, green or not – that would really diminish our profit.

We’re looking into whether there is a local drop-off point that we could use or if Earthworks would be willing to cover the shipping cost. If so, we’ll collect the cards at the school and church, and then dispose of them at the local drop-off.

Stay tuned as we investigate the idea further. We’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, hang on to your used Scrip cards. Hopefully we’ll find a nice, green way to dispose of them!

p.s. I’ve got the first of our ‘What Holy Crossers are doing on their summer vacation’ pix. Check back tomorrow – I’ll start posting them. Send me a pic of one of your family’s summer adventures!

Scrip 101

April 21, 2010

Does your family use SCRIP? It’s an easy way to help raise money for Holy Cross, and it’s a win-win proposition.

If you don’t already know, SCRIP is basically gift cards that you buy from the parish/school. You buy them at face value, and a percentage of the purchase is donated to Holy Cross (we can buy them at a reduced price – the percentage varies from store to store.)

LOTS of businesses where you currently shop are on the list, I’m sure. There are restaurants, gas station, grocery stores, retail of all sorts, online shopping (including SchoolMall, but that’s a whole other blog post!) The SCRIP list is long. Pick up a form at the church or school, if you’re interested – or download the forms online (form for SCRIP we keep in stock all the time and form for SCRIP we sometimes have to order).

You can choose to have the entire percentage donated to Holy Cross, or you can split the percentage. If you have a child at Holy Cross School, you can put your percentage of the SCRIP purchase toward your child’s tuition the following year (We tabulate your SCRIP purchases all year, and you get a statement in May of your total. At that time, you can choose to donate it to the Guardian Angel Fund or your child’s tuition.)

To give you an idea of the financial reward of the Scrip program for Holy Cross, think about this:

  • If one family buys $100 of Hy-Vee SCRIP each week for a year,
    the return is: $260 (5%)
  • If one family buys $50 of Penney’s or Kohl’s SCRIP each month for a year,
    the return is: $30 (5%) –
you can even use Kohl’s SCRIP to pay your Kohl’s charge!
  • If one family buys $100 of CVS, Walgreen’s, or Wal-Mart SCRIP
each month for a year, the return is: $24 (2%)
  • If one family does all of the above, their “extra” annual contribution
    to Holy Cross is: $314
  • If 200 families did this, the extra annual contribution to Holy Cross
    would be $62,800

The SCRIP cards make great gifts.

They’re also a good tool for budgeting. (How much is your family’s monthly grocery budget? Spend that for SCRIP to your grocery store and that’s it. That’s what you get for the month. Makes it easier to stick with it, some say.)

Bottomline, you’re going to buy groceries and gas, right? Get into the habit of thinking ahead and buying SCRIP to make your purchase. Like I said, win-win.

You can purchase the SCRIP cards at Holy Cross School during the week and at Holy Cross Church before and after mass on the weekend. The organizers make it really easy. You can even send your SCRIP order form in via backpack mail along with your check, and your cards will be returned to you within days.
