Raising The Bar

May 17, 2012

from Holy Cross mom, Wendy Regehr -

We’ll collect pop tabs at our Field Day assembly on Monday for the third year. Holy Cross school families collected 35 pounds of tabs in 2010. We smashed that total with 62 pounds of tabs in 2011.  Can we beat our record this year?  How about if we try collecting 75 pounds this time?

Please send your collected tabs into your child(ren)’s classroom. Each class will bring their tabs to the assembly to pour into one big collective container.

Ronald McDonald House collects the tabs as a fundraiser. Did you know there is more aluminum in the tab of a soda can than in the whole rest of the can? It’s solid aluminum, while the rest of the can contains other alloys. Our Holy Cross donation helps the Ronald McDonald House Charities provide help to families of sick children. Thanks for your help with our pop tab project!

Pop Tabs Delivered

May 31, 2011

from Holy Cross mom and pop tab coordinator, Wendy Regehr -

We delivered the pop-tabs Saturday.  See below for photos.

We filled the grey bin in the photo to the rim.  They were very appreciative of the Holy Cross kids’ efforts.  The lady in the photo with me is a Ronald McDonald House volunteer. I made Meredith pose with Ronald, since she admitted that she thought he was real when she first saw him as we walked out the front door.

They actually have two “houses” near Children’s Mercy.  Sadly, they are nearly full.  Meredith and I toured the main house and got to see the only room that wasn’t occupied.  The volunteer that gave us the tour said they had a lot of families from Joplin staying at the houses.

We Blew By 35!

May 25, 2011

from Holy Cross mom, Wendy Regehr -

Great job on the pop-tabs -

Holy Cross collected 62 lbs. this year!

That’s more than 78,000 tabs, and if we put them end to end we’d have over a mile of pop-tabs. Last year Holy Cross collected 35 lbs.

Keep collecting those tabs all summer long, and let’s see how much we get next year.

The pop-tabs will be delivered to Ronald McDonald House this week.  Congratulations to all the kids for doing such a great job collecting pop-tabs!

Why collect pop-tabs?  Ronald McDonald House collects pop-tabs instead of the entire can because tabs are pure high-quality aluminum, unlike cans which consists of aluminum and other alloys.  Tabs are also easier to store than the whole cans. All proceeds from the recycled pop-tabs go directly to the Ronald McDonald House Charities.

Can We Beat 35 Lbs?

April 27, 2011

from Holy Cross mom, Wendy Regehr -

Holy Cross students collected 35 pounds of pop tabs
for the Ronald McDonald House Charities last year.

Hopefully we can surpass that total this year!

We’ll collect tabs from each classroom at the Field Day assembly in May. So even if you haven’t started saving until today, you’ve got a month to go! (8th graders, remember to bring your tabs into the classroom before graduation, please.)

Thanks for your help.

Save Those Pop Tabs!

March 30, 2011

I hope you’re all saving the tabs off your soda cans.
We’re still collecting them at Holy Cross School.

Wendy Regehr (5th-grade Meredith’s mom) is leading the charge again this year.

Here’s a reminder of the good that it does to just do the simple step to take that tab off and save it -

  • There is more aluminum in the tab of a soda can than in the whole rest of the can! It’s solid aluminum, while the rest of the can contains other alloys.

Please consider keeping a jar on your kitchen counter where you can toss the tabs.

There are collection bins in the classrooms, so when your jar gets full, send it in with your student to empty.  Don’t have a student @ Holy Cross? Just stop by the school office with your tabs!

Thanks for your help.

A Successful First Year of Pop Tabs

May 21, 2010

Thanks to Mrs. Regehr for organizing the Pop Tab collection program and providing this update –

Congratulations & a big THANKS to all the kids for the
pop tabs
they collected for the Ronald McDonald House
Charities
in this first year that we’ve kept them.

The grand total collected at the assembly Tuesday weighed
35 pounds and completely filled a large container –
24” x 16” x 12”!

Keep saving those pop tabs all summer.  You can turn in
any kind of pull tab… from aluminum soda cans, soup containers, tuna cans,
pet food cans, etc

The Ronald McDonald House was very thankful.  Keep up the good work!!

(for more information about our pop tab program, read Mrs. Regehr’s first post.)

Guest Blogger Mrs. Regehr: Pop Tab Collection

December 18, 2009

Wendy Regehr (4th-grade Meredith’s mom) blogging for Mrs. Gates today:

Did you know there is more aluminum in the tab of a soda can than in the whole rest of the can? It’s solid aluminum, while the rest of the can contains other alloys.

It’s why the Ronald McDonald House collects them as a fundraiser.  And now Holy Cross is helping out too!

Keep a cup on your kitchen counter and toss the tab in there when you’re popping open a can.  When you’ve got a bunch collected, bring a bagful into school. There are collection bins in each of the classrooms.

It’s easy to do and it’s for a great cause. Thanks for your help!
