Snow Day Wednesday

February 1, 2011

School has been canceled

on Wednesday for

Johnson and Wyandotte Co.

Catholic Schools.

With the snow days this week it is going to be challenging for our 8th graders who are organizing our Mission Carnival on Thursday. With your help they will still be able to have a successful event.

Remember that tickets are $.25 each or 5 for $1.00
Please send ticket money to school Thursday morning
in an envelope clearly marked with:

Mission Carnival Tickets
Your Child’s Name & Room Code

Also, we are asking each family to bring two 2-Liter bottles of pop.  Send them with your oldest child.  I know with the weather this might be a challenge if you have not purchased them.  We will appreciate whatever you can do.

For more information about the carnival,
please read the flyer in last week’s newsletter.

Winter Weather Policies

December 15, 2010

The weather is getting cold and we are sure to have some “winter weather”  coming our way.  I just want to remind you all of the policy regarding school closings.

The decision to close school due to weather is made by Dr. O’Hara, the superintendent of schools.

She notifies the media.  Your best source of information is to watch one of the major TV networks.  We will be listed as either

Johnson and Wyandotte County Catholic Schools

or

Wyandotte and Johnson County Catholic Schools

WE WILL NOT BE LISTED AS HOLY CROSS CATHOLIC SCHOOL.

If you see that listing, it refers to Holy Cross in Kansas City, MO.

Once school has started, we do not close school early due to weather.  You, as the parent, may make the decision to pick your child up early if you feel like.

Have a lovely winter!

Short Week for Students

October 26, 2010

Just a reminder that school will be dismissed at noon tomorrow (Wednesday) and there won’t be classes on Thursday and Friday.  You should all have received notice of your teacher conference schedules. If you didn’t, check your student’s school bag and/or call the school office.

This afternoon, we’ll have our Trash Bag Assembly. It’s always an exciting gathering, as we announce the biggest sellers from the trash bag fundraiser.

I’m also looking forward to hearing the debut performance of our fifth-grade band! They’ve been practicing hard.

Don’t forget that students can wear black and orange tomorrow instead of school uniforms. They’ll be dismissed at noon following their class Halloween parties.

If you’re able to offer an hour or two of time after dismissal on Wednesday, we’d love your help to do yard work around the gym entrance. Bring gloves, rakes or trimmers if you can – or just show up, ready to work! We appreciate any time and assistance you can offer.

Enjoy your days off school. I look forward to seeing you ghosts and goblins at Trunk or Treat on Friday night at the church parking lot!

Days Off in October

October 11, 2010

I know. I know. Holy Cross students are off quite a few days in October. It’s true.

Besides the normal October conference days, there are two teacher in-service days. I wanted to take the opportunity to let you know what we’ll be doing during that time.

Today, October 11, we will all be traveling to Topeka for an Archdiocesan In-Service.  This type of in-service only happens every three years.  All of the teachers and administrators across the entire archdiocese get together for a day of faith development.  These in-services are always very uplifting.

On October 22, we will have an in-service day here at Holy Cross.  We will spend the morning analyzing our Kansas Assessment data from last spring and using that information to make instructional decisions.  In the afternoon, we will have our third School of Faith class.  Each time we meet for School of Faith, we have community time, personal prayer and reflections, and we study a portion of the Gospel of Matthew.

School will be dismissed at noon Wed, October 27, and there is no school on Thursday or Friday that week. Make sure you have turned in your conference form, so that we can get those all scheduled. Thanks!

“Misc. Things Thursday”

September 16, 2010

For lack of a better name, I’m calling this “Misc. Things Thursday.”  I just have a bunch of little things to note in the blog today.  Feel free to comment and add any others that I’m missing. Also, please share the blog via e-mail, Twitter, Facebook, etc. (see below the post) to share with other Holy Cross families you think might have missed it.

  • Entertainment Books are now available for sale. $25. Sales will continue through Sept. 20.  A book will come home with your student – send $25 in if you’d like to purchase the book, return the book otherwise. You can purchase additional books in the school office – keep one in each of your family vehicles, so that you always have those coupons with you when you need them!
  • Tomorrow is FIT Club Friday, so if your student has a FIT Club shirt, they can wear it to school.
  • School will be dismissed at noon on Friday this week, with teachers doing an in-service in the afternoon with the new School of Faith program. ASC will be open and available until 5:30 p.m. Contact Mrs. Growney if you want more information.
  • Don’t forget our students will take the ITBS tests next week at Holy Cross. Make sure to send them in with a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast for a great start to the day!
  • Penny Miller, director at our Holy Cross Early Education Center, has entered the world of blogging!  Check out the EEC blog at http://holycrosseec.wordpress.com. You can sign up to get an e-mail alert when there is a new blog post added. (You can do that on this blog also, you know – right? – at the top of the right column here).

School’s Out!

May 20, 2010

School’s Out For The Summer… ¸.•**•♫♪

Well, the students are done, anyway. After our final all-school mass of the year, classes were dismissed at 11:30 for the final time in the 2009/10 school year.

A reminder — you can find our school office summer hours and the major dates school calendar for next year here on the blog site (the link is in the right column under the ‘Pages’ header.)

I probably will not post entries to the blog daily over the summer. You’ll want to sign up for e-mail alerts to let you know when there is something new here. To do this, just type in your e-mail address in the right column just under the header, where it says ‘E-mail Subscription.’

Have a great summer!

The Mysterious Teacher In-Service Days

April 30, 2010

No School at Holy Cross today – well, at least for the students!  It is a teacher in-service day, meaning extra learning and development opportunities for our Holy Cross educators.

Teacher In-Service Days are used for many different professional development and school improvement activities.  We do everything from faith development/formation, curriculum & instruction updates (this includes training in programs like MTSS, strategies for teaching content areas, behavior management, emergency preparedness, first aid/CPR, discussing policies/procedures, students with special needs, learning to gather and use data to make instructional decisions, and many other school improvement efforts).

The in-service today is dedicated to conducting Transition Meetings.  The purpose of these meetings is to provide an opportunity for teachers and parents to plan for student transitions from grade level to grade level.  These meetings focus on children with special learning needs (this can include learning disabilities, attention deficits, organizational challenges, giftedness, health/medical issues, etc.)

On a related note there will be no Friday Family Fun Night tonight at the school.

Create your own fun with the family tonight… F3 will be back in two weeks. Next  week will be an Adult Friday Fun Night. Set up a babysitter for the kids and plan on meeting at the Longbranch at 7 p.m. on May 7.
