An assortment of news and notes from Holy Cross to start your week -

  • Thanks again to Johnny’s Tavern @ 95th and Antioch for hosting a Holy Cross Day last week. More than $115 was raised for the school. Thanks to all who attended and mentioned Holy Cross.  Look for another Holy Cross Day @ Johnny’s after school starts next fall!
  • Congratulations to the 2012-13 Holy Cross Student Council – President Rebecca Haeusser, Vice President Ellie Thompson, Secretary Emma Kate Callahan and Spirit Booster Allie Canfield!
  • Several field trips are planned for this final full week of the school year. What beautiful weather is forecasted!
  • PTO and Mrs. Obershaw are still looking for a few volunteers for Field Day next Monday. If you can spare an hour or two, please call the school office.
  • Check with your student(s) to see if they turned in all their library books. They were due to the library last Friday, but some are still out there.
  • Talk with your student about whether your family is going to donate remaining used school supplies at the end of the school year. If you wish to donate the school supplies when the students clear out their desks, please drop them off in collection boxes outside of Mrs. O’Brien’s classroom in the primary hallway. The Sisters of St. Francis of the Holy Eucharist will send the supplies to children in Tanzania, Ghana and Nigeria. They also need desks and tables, if you have any to offer.

Results From The Lincoln Jar Contest

February 13, 2012

from Holy Cross teacher Allison Carney -

Holy Cross students went excavating during Catholic Schools Week.

Yes, they dug through sofas, chairs, and piggy banks to find pennies and silver coins for the Lincoln Jar Contest.  The goal for the contest was to raise money for The Gabriel Project of Holy Cross by collecting pennies and putting them in the jar marked with your homeroom.

The twist was that students could place silver coins in other classroom jars to negate their pennies. Many students were seen dumping their entire piggy banks full of pennies into their classroom jar in the hope of winning the contest.

Mrs. Anderson’s first grade class won first place in the contest and will have ice cream treats for their efforts.

In the end, the real winner was The Gabriel Project.
One thousand dollars was raised and donated to the project.

Contact Leah Conner for more information on the fantastic work of The Gabriel Project.  (Click here for a previous blog post about The Gabriel Project.)

Mission Carnival Results

February 8, 2012

from Holy Cross 8th-Grade Teacher, Mrs. Patterson -

Every year the 8th grade students of Holy Cross Catholic School plan, organize, and run a Mission Carnival for the school.  All of the proceeds collected are given to a charity or mission of their choice.

As a class, they first decided on a theme for their carnival.  This year’s theme was “Under the Sea”.  The 8th graders worked together planning and creating games and activities for the younger students.  Every aspect of the carnival is organized and run by the entire eighth grade class. Tickets are sold to the younger students the week of the carnival which raise the money for the chosen mission or charity.  While the younger students thoroughly enjoy themselves, the 8th graders work very hard to make it a fun experience for all who attend.

As Catholics we are taught to share our time, talents, and treasure with others, particularly with those who are in need.  This year the class raised an amazing $1000 in ticket sales! We are very excited to announce that this money will be sent to the Fr. Bob Conroy and the Missionaries of Charities Fathers in Guatemala. He is currently trying to build a soup kitchen and we know these funds will serve the poorest of the poor in a beautiful way.

Resultados de Misión Carnaval

Desde la maestra del 8 º grado , Sra. Patterson-
