Calling All Readers!

November 22, 2011

Holy Cross Librarian Anne Anderson has extended the deadline to enter teams into the school’s Battle of the Books competition. 4th, 5th and 6th graders are encouraged to put together teams of 4 – 6 people to participate, as well as an adult ‘team manager’ to help them.

The teams get a list of 30 books to read.  In the spring, Mrs. Anderson coordinates a tournament competition between the teams, quizzing them about details from the books on the list. The top two teams in the Holy Cross tournament will participate against other schools in the Archdiocese.

The new deadline is Friday, December 9. Talk to Mrs. Anderson if you have any questions.

Mrs. Anderson is also organizing a Book Club for our Jr. High book lovers!  The book club for 7th and 8th graders will meet in the library at 2:30 on Tuesdays in December.  Please bring along three book suggestions.

For more information on what’s going on at the Holy Cross Library, visit Mrs. Anderson’s library website!

Archdiocese Champs

May 5, 2011

On Thursday, April 28, Holy Cross hosted the Archdiocesan Battle of the Books Championship. Our school competed against St. Ann’s and Holy Rosary (Wea) battling through questions over a list of thirty books read this past school year. Students voluntarily form Battle teams in the fall and read as many books possible to get ready for competition.

Teams representing Holy Cross were the 2011 Champs: The Sport Heads Queen Bee Readers: Emma Kate Callahan, Allison Cashman, Ashley Helm, Ellie Thompson, & Bailey Thomson; as well as the Sport Heads: Gage Gailloux, Jorge Palazuelos, William Sweatt, & Landon Wirt.

It was an impressive competition because for the first time, the correct author was given for every single answer! After six tough battles, Holy Cross’ own team, the Sport Heads were declared the Champions. Congratulations to these 5th grade boys!

The following books were included in the 2010/2011 Battle of the Books:

  • All About Sam
  • Best School Year Ever
  • Call it Courage
  • Charlie & the Chocolate Factory
  • Courage of Sarah Noble
  • Dealing with Dragons

  • Island of the Blue Dolphins
  • Jeremy Thatcher

Battle of the Books

March 11, 2011

Congratulations to the Sportheads, who won this year’s Holy Cross Battle of the Books.

The Sportheads, including 5th graders Landon Wirt, William Sweatt, Jorge Palazuelos and Gage Gailloux, will represent Holy Cross along with the Queen Bee Readers, who came in second place after many, many tie-breaking rounds of the final battle. Both teams will face teams from Holy Rosary-Wea and St. Ann’s in April.

After an individual written test and a practice team match-up at the school, six Battle of the Books teams competed for the championship at the Oak Park Barnes & Noble on Monday night.

A great job by everyone involved.
And thanks to our Holy Cross librarian Anne Anderson for organizing the competition!

Summer Reading

May 25, 2010

Story TimeThere are some fantastic incentives out there to keep kids reading throughout the summer. Here are a few:

  • Johnson County Library
Summer Reading 2010 - link to website
There are 2 programs – one for the younger readers, one for age 10+.
There are various forms, depending on the readers’ age, so visit their website or a library branch to get the right form. Once students read their books, fill out the form and return it
to a JoCo library branch, they get to pick a free book!

Have them start reading from the William Allen White award-winners book list!  Kansas students who read at least two books on the list get to vote for their pick for the winner. Librarian Anne Anderson puts together a great William Allen White program for Holy Cross. Students who read at five books from their year’s WAW list get to attend a pizza party in the library in the spring. Those who read all the books on their list get to go on an overnight field trip in October to Emporia, Kansas, the hometown of William Allen White. The students get to meet with authors of the books, tour WAW’s home, etc. It’s a fun trip and well worth the reading!

6th-8th grade list:

A Difficult Boy | M.P. Barker
Diamond Willow | Helen Frost
Every Soul A Star | Wendy Mass
Itch | Michelle D. Kwasney
Keep the Night Watch | Hope Anita Smith
Milagros: Girl From Away | Meg Medina
Savvy | Ingrid Law
The Boy Who Dared: a Novel Based on the True Story of Hitler’s Youth | Susan Campbell Bartoletti
The Cabinet of Wonders | Marie Rutkoski
The Floating Circus | Tracie Vaughn Zimmer
The Underneath | Kathi Appelt
Waiting for Normal | Leslie Connor

3rd-5th grade list:

The Adventures of Sir Lancelot the Great | Gerald Morris
Buffalo Song
| Joseph Bruchac
Chancey of the Maury River
| Gigi Amateau
Elevent
| Patricia Reilly Giff
42 Miles
|Tracie Vaughn Zimmer
Freedom Train
| Evelyn Coleman
Masterpiece
| Elise Broach
Planting the Trees of Kenya: the Story of Wangari Maathai
| Claire A. Nivola
Swindle
| Gordon Korman

And have them start in on the Battle of the Books list for the 2011 battles after that! Librarian Anne Anderson will have that list available soon, and I’ll post it then.
