Thanks for joining us for Holy Cross Back to School Night. I want to recap the highlights, both for those who were there and those who weren’t able to make it.
Father Bob began the evening with a prayer and a message to our school families. Then, I got the opportunity to introduce our fabulous Holy Cross teachers.

Next, Officer Covington, our Holy Cross DARE officer, spoke about the parking lot drop-off/pick-up system in the lot behind the school. Attached is a picture of the lot with the recommended traffic flow. You can also find the diagram in the school directory.
The most important takeaway for the safety of all our students is that we need parents to drop off the children on the west end of the lot. There is a sidewalk there that they can take to walk to the entrance. Don’t drop them off further east, because it backs up traffic onto 95th Street very quickly. It also slows down the whole process. If you’re parking in the middle, please park your car pointing south. When it’s time to get into the pick-up loop, drive forward out of your spot and join up with the traffic at the southeast corner of the lot.
Please DO NOT drop students off at the front of the building. There were at least ten cars dropping students there this morning still. Please adhere to dropping off your student at your assigned lot. If you have any questions about which one that is, please call the school office. We’ll walk you through the process.
I understand that it might take awhile for everyone to get into the swing of the routine that Officer Covington outlined, but it is the quickest and safest method for us to use. I appreciate your cooperation.

Our theme for this school year is Celebrate Jesus. We break this down by quarter – Celebrate Jesus, Celebrate Others (diversity, culture), Celebrate Holy Cross (join us for Celebration in January!) and Celebrate Life.
I’ll do some individual posts over the next few weeks about some of the other subjects I touched on last night – Teacher Wish List, Celebration, etc.
There are some policy changes in our handbook this year that I pointed out last night:
- On page 35-36, in the Parents section – “maintain Christian decorum in all manner of communication with school personnel and other members of the school community.” Just think twice before you hit ‘send’ on the e-mail or before you leave a voicemail, OK? We all want what is best for our students. We’re all working toward the same goal.
- On page 42-43 in the Communications section – feel free to communicate with your child’s teacher via e-mail, but understand that any concerns should be addressed in person. The teacher will help arrange a time for you to get together to work out the issue or address your concerns.
- On page 44, field trip permission slips are discussed. Bottomline, no permission slip, no field trip participation. Verbal OKs are no longer acceptable. Make sure the permission slip gets turned in for your child to join the group.
I hope your questions were answered when you visited your students’ classrooms. If not, feel free to contact the teacher or the office staff with any lingering questions.
Thanks to the PTO for putting together the reception in Pflumm Hall. I hope you had the chance to stop by and find out more about the Teacher Wish Lists. I’ll have more about that online soon.
Thanks for coming. It’s official now – the 2010/11 school year is well underway!
